Their sound is fantastic, their precision second to none, their devotion radiates and Alberola has obviously forged a bond with this fine young orchestra. (Sociedad Española de Ornitología) whose last list of species dates from 2012, just one year before P. viridis sharpei was raised to species. My wife and I observed the first species at length in Catalonia a few years ago. I follow the taxonomy of the IOC World Bird List and the species you see and have photographed is considered a full species, Iberian Green Woodpecker (Picus sharpei) As for the Wryneck I have seen this species but only in Ethiopia in the winter when the bird has left most parts of Europe.
